Thanks A Million For
Giving It All Away

In memory of Percy Ross
Philanthropist, Thanks A Million

Percy Ross passed away on November 11, 2001. We miss him dearly.

“When I was young, I never once owned a bicycle of my own. It was kind of sad. I guess I was sort of envious of the other kids’ good fortunes,” recalls Percy Ross, (deceased, 2001) who today is a youthful 83 year old self-made multimillionaire philanthropist.

Ross is best known for his weekly syndicated newspaper column “Thanks a Million” which ran in over 800 publications. “Thanks a Million” also became a daily radio show and was syndicated to 400 radio stations. He gave away an estimated $20 – $30 million fortune over 17 exciting years to tens of thousands of strangers.

His editor, Nancy Webber and a staff of 10 processed 40,000 requests each month. About 150 people each week received checks from Ross. Most were in amounts less than $1,000. Three of the top stories were featured in his column each week. As a team, they shared hope by helping those in need.

The son of poor immigrants from Latvia and Russia, Ross grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula during the Great Depression. He recalls, “When I was just six years old, I dreamed of somehow becoming a millionaire.” Today he is living his dream. Ross made and lost three fortunes in his life in furs, construction equipment and in trash bags. In 1969, Ross sold his trash bag company for $8 million and divided it equally between his wife, two sons and himself.

Ross then became an investment entrepreneur. Over the years he made investments in over 100 ventures, 98 were failures, however two were successful and allowed him to fulfill his dream of being a philanthropist.

“He who lives while he gives… also knows where it goes,” are words of wisdom Ross has put into practice. Ross started “Thanks a Million” at age 66, an age when most would just be entering the golden years of retirement. Not so for Ross who still works 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Ross has given money to poor families for groceries, for a wig for a little girl who lost her hair to chemotherapy, a lifesaving organ transplant, and $16,500 worth of silver dollars to children at a parade, to name just a few.

“The American Dream is being able to pursue anything you want, without restrictions or limitation, but in keeping with the law, that fills your passion for life. The advice I would give to someone chasing after his or her dream is to never, ever give up. That may sound trite, but it is the single-most factor that allowed me to achieve my dreams. Call it tenacity or perseverance, the end result is the same.”

For the kid who never owned a bike, the tables have turned. In 1977, Ross held an Extravaganza Christmas Eve Party for 1,050 underprivileged children from Minneapolis. At the end of the party all the kids were treated to something very special. As the final curtain rose, the kids were speechless as they witnessed in front of them 1,050 brand new bikes, one for each of them.

Due to a huge demand by so many loyal readers and listeners, Ross decided to make his inspiring, updated book “Ask For The Moon–And Get It!” available soon. On the horizon, “One of the last things I would like to accomplish in my lifetime is to create a greater awareness for safety on our highways. I’m developing a $200,000 automobile safety contest. I also plan to spend more time with my beautiful wife of 60 years, Laurian.”

On September 19, 1999, Ross completed his life long dream and published his last column. “I’ve achieved my goal. I’ve given it all away. And, if by chance I can make another pile of money, I’ll be back giving it away. Until then…Thanks a Million!”

Thanks a Million has now closed for good.
